For the FIGIPAS Meeting from July 1st through 4th

World's chemistry innovators gather in Palermo

PALERMO (JUNE 29, 2009) – New solutions to abundantly get hydrogen simply by solar irradiation of water; new "hybrid" materials for LED lights finally affordable; new catalysts for chemical manufacturing processes entirely clean.

These are just a few exemples of the innovations made possible by scientific advances that will be discussed by some 300 scientists from 45 Countries gathering this week in Palermo for the upcoming 10th FIGIPAS meeting in inorganic chemistry jointly organized by Italy' Cnr and Palermo's University. This international meeting offers an amazingly rich variety of spot news, features and background for media who cover science, medicine, health, food, energy, environment and business. Modern chemistry may be the most multi-disciplinary science, and this meeting promises to include newsworthy topics, including

  • Exciting advances in role of chemistry in molecular medicine
  • Health threats from chromium and other heavy metals
  • How nanochemistry is eventually realizing the promises of nanotechnology
  • The next generation of solar cells and other renewable sources of energy.
  • New findings on the respiratory chains of metal respiring organisms
  • The role of computation and chirality in chemistry
  • The latest progress in finding new active catalysts for Zero Emission chemical syntheses
  • New "hybrid" materials for new generation displays and sensors

The Organizing Committe staff will be available to arrange telephone interviews. For media registration and meeting information email the conference chairman at mario.pagliaro@ismn.cnr.it. For reporters unable to travel to the beautiful Palermo Area, the Organizing Committe will post online at figipas.org non-technical summaries of the presentations, and news releases every conference day.
